What it does and what it leaves alone
It takes out
- Free chlorine, 96 percent of it, held across the cartridge's 8,000 gallons
- The chlorine smell in the steam, which leaves with the free chlorine
- Grit and rust flakes down to 50 microns, caught in the pre-screen
It leaves alone
- Calcium and magnesium, which is hardness. Softening needs a tank and salt at the mains
- Chloramine, which needs far longer contact than any shower head has
- Your water pressure, which is set by the 2.5 gallon federal cap

Questions people ask
How do I know if I have chlorine or chloramine?
Your utility publishes it in the annual water quality report, in the same table as the hardness figure. Search your town name plus water quality report. Chloramine needs longer contact than a shower head can give, so the answer decides whether this is the right buy for you.
What will I actually notice?
The smell first. Free chlorine is what you smell in hot steam, and 96 percent of it is gone from the first shower on. After that it is your skin and your hair, and there is no number behind that half. Watch your face in the ten minutes after a hot shower, and watch how your hair feels once it has dried on its own. Sixty days is long enough to answer both, and that is what the sixty days are for.
Will this soften my water?
No. Hardness is calcium and magnesium. Taking those out needs an ion exchange tank and salt where the water enters the house. Clearfall works on chlorine and sediment.
Does it slow the water down?
It runs at the same 2.5 gallons per minute the federal cap allows for any shower head. If the flow drops later, the pre-screen needs a rinse.
What if I forget the cartridge?
The date is printed on the cartridge face. A standing order sends the next one on its own at the same $24. Skipping a swap leaves the head exactly as it is, the media simply stop working.
